Flipping houses can be fatal! When Katelyn finds a dead body in her first home renovation project, she seriously doubts her decision to “follow her bliss.” After getting fired from her steady job, her plan to flip houses takes a hit when she becomes a suspect. After all, possession is nine points of the law, isn’t it? Especially, when it’s a dead body.

To keep herself in pizza, peanut butter, good coffee, and her stray cat, Boots, in kitty chow she takes survival jobs as a wine sample hostess and market researcher. Meanwhile, Sheriff Don is kind of hunky, and her ex-husband, Eddy (it’s complicated) is back in her life sleeping on her sofa. How’s a girl supposed to solve dead body mysteries, make a living, and find love?

Katelyn’s Fatal Flip Home Improvement Tips
9-12-18
My motivation for FATAL FLIP, A Home Renovator Mystery came from my passion for home projects. I had a carpenter father whom I tagged behind while he drywalled, wall papered, pounded nails, and painted. I was the go-fer. In college, I interned at a housing agency in Minneapolis, Minnesota where I researched, wrote, and edited a home improvement newsletter.
As an adult with home projects of my own, I’ve painted, drywalled, wall papered, and more. Now, I write about them.
Here are a few tips from Katelyn in Fatal Flip:
*Personally, if I need a little paint for a closet, or small area, I’ll mix together left overs from different projects. It’s probably best not to mix different sheens i.e., satin and flat, but in the world of neutral colors, it’s doable.
*Curb appeal makes a potential buyer stop at a house. Fresh paint on the door, hardware and new house numbers, along with a pot of flowers will get people to stop, and buy your house. Crime scene tape, not so much.
*Sometimes the best thing to do when rehabbing a property—is to hire a professional to do stuff you can’t do, or don’t do well. A drywall contractor—preferably one who works cheap, can do the job in half the time it would take you (or me), and with zero frustration. It approaches an art form to blend in the gap between drywall sheets with tape and mud.
*To get rid of a musty basement smell, put out jars of white vinegar. It takes a few days, but clears up the smell—now you just have to figure out why there’s a musty smell.
*Plant marigolds around vegetables and other flowers to keep deer at bay. The deer and rabbits hate the smell. Marigold are actually weeds. Daffodils are another deterrent to deer—but I don’t have a lot of luck with daffodils coming back as perennials—so what’s the point.
*Whenever I get a bug for frugal living, I go on the internet for cheap ideas. I’ve gotten recipes for homemade laundry soap and dishwasher detergent, and tried them both.
*To eliminate aphids on flowers, mix a small amount of dishwashing soap in a bucket of water and douse the plants. It’s a natural and inexpensive method to rid the plants of pests.
*For added home security with a patio slider, put a broom handle in the track space between the doors after the slider is closed. It doesn’t have to be pretty, just functional. I’m all for pretty and functional, though.
*When in doubt, always consult a professional when doing home projects.
